Prevalence testing tells us the number of COVID-19 cases in a population at one point in time.

Mandatory Prevalence Testing for Asymptomatic Students

Saliva Testing

Who:All asymptomatic students living on Grounds or in the local Charlottesville or Albemarle County area*. This includes graduate and professional students as well as undergraduates.
What:Prevalence testing tells us the number of COVID-19 cases in a population at one point in time. Our prevalence screening program is mandatory, quick and easy, and relies on saliva samples to detect the virus.
When:Students must test weekly when they are in the local Charlottesville or Albemarle County area between January 11 and January 30, 2021. For this period, students may select their own test days and times from the walk-in hours.

Beginning on February 1, 2021 and continuing throughout the Spring 2021 semester, students must test on a designated day each week. This is mandatory. More details TBA.
Where:Saliva screening takes place at multiple locations. Please see https://besafe.virginia.edu for a list of all locations.
Why:Prevalence screening helps us identify silent carriers before they transmit the virus. Our goal is to test all asymptomatic students regularly.
How:Students participate through a mandatory, free saliva screening taking less than 10 minutes with presentation of their UVA ID. Students who have lost or misplaced their UVA Academic ID should first schedule an appointment to obtain a replacement by submitting the ID Replacement Request Form online. For questions related to a replacement UVA Health ID, call 434-982-4009 or email idservices@virginia.edu.
Results:Outcomes will be available within 72 hours. You will receive an email from Be Safe with a link to follow for negative and inconclusive results. Students with positive results will be contacted by phone by Student Health and Wellness. You will receive a second email from UVA Health MyChart when your medical record has been updated. If you have any issues with MyChart, please call 434-243-2500.

*You do not need to test through UVA’s prevalence testing if you are currently in isolation or quarantine, if you are not living in the local Charlottesville/Albemarle County area, if you have tested positive in the last 90 days, or if you have symptoms of COVID-19.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should make an appointment with Student Health and Wellness either online or by calling 434-924-5362 to be evaluated asap.
